For the Cookies:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
For the Royal Icing:
4 cups powdered sugar
3 tbsp meringue powder
5–6 tbsp water
Gel food coloring (various shades)
For Decoration:
Coarse sanding sugar or rock sugar
Edible glitter or luster dust
Edible gold paint or gold leaf (optional)
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla.
Mix dry ingredients and add to wet. Form dough, chill 1 hour.
Roll dough to ¼ inch, cut shapes. Bake at 350°F for 8–10 minutes. Cool completely.
Make royal icing and tint in shades. Pipe borders, flood centers, and let dry.
Add geode decoration with icing and sugar crystals. Dust with glitter or luster dust.
Outline with gold paint if desired. Let dry fully before serving.
Use tweezers or small spoon to place crystals precisely.
Store in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
